Even though Taiwan is around 14 000 kilometres away from Switzerland, the island and the alp republic have many things in common: They are both about the same size and around half of their area is mountains. As a matter of fact, Taiwan’s highlands have striking similarities with the Swiss mountains. But comparing to Switzerland, Taiwan’s plain is far more populous: 23 million people live here in one single agglomeration, reaching from the capital Taipeh down to the south coast.
